All about the Telegraph
Why was it created: The telegraph was created to make long distance communication easier. Before it could take months for a letter to reach its destination but with the telegraph depending on how far the destination is it could a day to 10 weeks for the message to be received, all without manual labor.
What was its purpose: The purpose in general was for faster communication so that time and resources weren't wasted and also so that when the message was received the information sent was still relevant.
How has it changed over time: The telegraph was the base for tele communications. Any digital device that we use today or was used in the past has been some sort of expansion off of the telegraph. Even though we don't communicate in Morse Code anymore the principal is the same, sending information through electrical current or now days networks and coding. A good example is cell phones which can send messages through a network to other devices.
Where is it now: Probably the only place you could find a telegraph today is in a museum. Since our technology has advanced so far past the original telegraph we really have no use or place for it in modern society. Even though it is decommissioned so to speak it did make way for radiography which is still a big part of society today.
Was it successful: Yes, the telegraph was successful. It was a huge part of American history and was the starting point for many great inventions today. Even though it couldn't stick around for centuries like the lightbulb, there were many improvements made to it that very much benefited society. Just about every every if not every modern form of electronic communication branched off from the telegraph. That in itself makes if a great success simply because it was foundation of our communication.
