Describe the time period
In Huckleberry Finn the time period is really unique. I haven’t read a book that was set in a time period like this in a long time so reading it now is fun. It’s pretty obvious that racism is still a common thing since in one of the chapter we see Huck’s father yelling around town about how a black man has more money than him and how he’s dressed in all white. He then goes on to make comments about how he’s should be sold off but he can’t since there are laws in place to keep them from sake for 6 months when they enter a new state. Another thing that interested me was how many viewed schooling. Of course many thought it was important but it was required like it is today, it is more of a career path so to speak. You could go through schooling and get a fine job or you could not and do say farm work and such. The way they talk and act makes me think old western as well, like when they say go into town to buy some goods that makes me think old western. They also hunt and fish for a lot of their food so you could say they are still “primitive” even though I feel like that is an exaggeration. I feel like it describes my change in views from the time frame in which this takes place. After some research I also found the real time it takes place is 1830's-1840's.
How does the POV influence the book
With the point of view coming from a young white boy I feel like we still see a lot even if what we see is not through the main characters actions. I feel like Huckleberry Finn sees a lot of racism especial since his dad is pretty racist. I feel like we see more of what normal life was for them without the main focus on slavery and racism.
Questions Chapters 6-11
Why does Pap have Huck locked up
Huck's dad thought that he could take better care of Huck than the widow. He doesn't want Huck going to school because no one in the family got an education, so why should he. He doesn't believe that it's ok for Huck to be smarter than him. He doesn't want Huck to run back off to the widow and start acting proper again.
How did Huck escape the shanty
Why does Huck not want to be called an abolitionist
An abolitionist is someone who wants slavery to go away or get abolished. This could be bad for Huck since his father was ok with racism so that would not go over well. Many other people dint think slavery was bad thing either so this would make Huck a bit of a social outcast. Being an abolitionist isn't a bad thing but the social consequences back then would revenge him and make his life more miserable than it is.
What gave away Huck's female persona
1)Huck's disguise was not very good to begin with
2)When he caught the thing that the lady threw at him he put his legs together when a girl would put them apart
3)He changed his fake name from the original name he told the lady
4)When he tried sewing he brought needle to the string when a lady would put the string to the needle

Questions Chapters 12-16
What is the story of the king and his son and how did Jim interperate it
The story was basically that King Solomon was the wises and one of the richest kings around. Huck and Jim get to talking about all of the kings wives and Huck thinks that He was the wisest man alive because Ms. Watson told him that so it must be true. Jim on the other hand having a wife and kids believes that the King is foolish for having so many wives and kids as there would no peace and quiet. Jim also isn't one for symbolism as when Huck and Jim are arguing about the King cutting a baby to resolve two people claiming the baby as their own. Jim fails to realize that the actual mother would not let this happen because it theirs and the destruction of the baby would resolve nothing while the fake mother would not be affected because they didn't have the baby to begin with. Over all Jim thinks that King Solomon is a fool and that he is no any more wise than Jim himself.
When Jim wakes up after their separation what does his reaction to Huck tell us about him
At first when he wakes up he is a little dazed and confused but when he comes to, he is really excited to see Huck again. He is relieved that after the struggles in the fog that both of them are ok, but Huck plays a trick on him and makes Jim think it was all a dream. Then Jim realizes that he was right about the fog as he say all the leaves and debris every where and gets sad because Huck made him look like a fool. This scene shows us that Jim is easily influenced about things he's not to sure about. Normally what Jim believes is what he believes forever but in this situation he wasn't sure and got fooled. It also shows us he has good intentions, with his reaction to Huck not being violent in any way but rather calm and humble, we know Jim doesn't mean any harm.
Why is Jim so superstitious
He would be very superstitious because he is maybe trying to make sense of all of his misfortunes. Even though Jim knows that most of his problems come from white peoples attitudes towards black people but I feel like he tries to suppress that a little bit and to make up for it he has all these crazy ideas about luck and karma and all sorts of things that many people today would not believe. A good example is the snake skin accident where Huck was just careless and wasn't thinking which resulted in a terrible event. Jim would say its super bad luck but any other person would just say that Huck was stupid and didn't think about the future.
What does the line tell us about Huck
This line tells us that Huck is getting used being friends with Jim and treating him as an equal. He humbled up and went and apologized to Jim for what he did. This makes Huck feel better because now they both have an understanding that they care about each other. Huck could be considered an abolitionist for this but its not like it mattered anyways cause what contact does he have with people that would punish him for it. This also made him feel more comfortable knowing that he is helping a good man get to the free states. At this point Huck was more comfortable in his decision to help Jim.
Outline the battle Huck has with himself about giving Jim up
Huck started to think about why he was with Jim and why he didn't turn him in. He starts thinking "What did Ms. Watson ever do to have her slave run away. I could have prevent that and turned him back in." He goes no like this for a while and then he thinks "Would I be any happier right now if I had turned him in". He realizes in this situation, doing right and doing wrong would both make him feel bad. A little ways further Jim starts thanking Huck for being his friend and being the only one right now to stay with him and this made Huck realize he did the right thing even if others may have frowned upon it.
Questions Chapters 17-21
Describe the Grangford Family
The Grangerford's are a weird family, maybe just as unique as Huck's but there is more than meets the eye. On paper they seem like a normal farming family with a lot of people in the family and most of them guys. If you meet them at their home it is a different story. When Huck met them they were so protective they had guns pointed at him and everything. Turns out they have a 30 year feud with with a ranching family across the way who have been killing each other ever since the feud started. The Grangerford's also had a young daughter who was very passionate towards others and a very talented artist and poet who died at a young age due to sickness.
Why would Mark Twain include the farmer-rancher beef and what does it tell us about them
He included it just to show us what the times were like back then. Feuds and family to family disagreements were way more common in the day and they were more violent too. Another reason he would include it is to "expose" how people just blindly follow what others do. In the book Buck liter says that he has no idea why they are still fighting and that both families have no idea why it even started. When we first started reading and we learned this book was a satire I didn't really see any satire but now as we progress through the book things like this I feel are hoping up more and more. One of the reasons why this is a great example of satire is because it is still true today people will just do what ever someone has one just because they did it. What this tells us about the families is that they are sheep, they are sheep that follow the same path that their parents and grandparent took.
How does the POV change what we are seeing and feeling during this section
As still being a young boy such a big conflict with gruesome violence would be rather unsettling. This is especially so since he knew one of the familys and saw the one boy his age dead. Being so young and knowing the family would give him plenty reason not to want to talk about the battle. Also his stance on the whole feud was that it was pointless and that they families had no reasons to be fighting so that adds in to his reasoning, it was just people killing each other for no reason.
Who are the King and the duke and why does Huck go with the story
The real Duke is the Duke of Bridgewater. The real King is the King of France, but neither of these men were dukes or kings but rather normal folk who were on the run just as Huck and Jim. The only reason Huck plays along is because there was no need to not to, what they were asking was not a lot and if it kept everyone happy with each other then it was good enough for Huck. He was ok with playing along and Jim didn't know any better so everything was good with him.
What are the issues with the Dukes solution to day rafting
The Dukes plan was to tie Jim up like he was a prisoner if people were about and then if they asked about Jim they would show them a wanted paper with Jim on it and say they were on their way to turn him in. One issue I see with this is Getting Jim bound up before people realized he was actually getting returned. Maybe they weren't paying attention and then someone noticed. Another thing is maybe they see Jim and then they want the reward for themselves and attack them and take Jim. This could easily happen since 200 dollars is a lot of money so people would be more inclined to take advantage of the situation. Another thing is just having Jim visible in general, have a black person out in the open floating down a river would seem kind of suspicious so you never know what will happen.

Questions Chapter 22-26
Why would the line at the bottom of the flyer get people to come
the line at the bottom really implies something that isn’t. It says women and children not allowed implying that the show that they are putting on is especially gory or mature, but they do not state why women and children are not allowed they just state it. For all the general public knows the duke could just have a predjudice against women and children but a normal guy see that and they just think that the show will be something spectacular. It is actually a very good scam because he is using human nature against the views for their. A normal person would look at the last line and all these things would start going off in their mind telling them that this show will be good.
Why does Huck not tell Jim and how can you not tell from the real kind
A big part is because he doesn't want Jim to do anything that would disrupt the peace and the raft and just in general. Huck is a person more of peace and rational while Jim is more controlled by his emotions and can be irrational. If Jim knew that they were posers he might get angry and do something that would ruin the whole get away. When Huck starts thinking about it these two guys are no different then any normal duke or king because normal dukes and kings are just as big of scum bags as the two bums who have joined Huck and Jim on their adventures. The real ones and the fake are both evil because they both desire power over the people who they think are inferior.
What does the last line in chapter 24 tell us about Huck
What Huck was talking about is using others misfortunes for personal gain. What made this super disturbing what that they were using people who had recently passed for money. They used the emotions of the close people to obtain lager amounts of money. As I mentioned before Huck is about order and peace and using dead people to manipulated other for money is just very profound.
How does the doctor know the King and the Duke are fake
To start the king claims to be English so he had to imitate an English accent. The doctor who is really the only smart on in the town saw through his accent and said “any one who talks in English as good as me is a faker” or something along this lines but no one believed the doctor. All the town folk claimed that he knew the names of all the people and details about the family, obviously those were all fake, hollow, general assumptions used to trick the people. If any of these people were not morning the the dead of the lady then I’m sure that they would realize that he is a fake king.
Why don't the King and Duke leave in the night with the money
The duke is eager to leave with the money and let the family be. The king on the other hand wants to stay and sell all the property for more money. He figures that once that they leave and everyone figures out that they weren’t real the property will go for next to nothing and by staying and selling the land they will be doing not good for the girls. In reality they are both huge scum bag who are doing an awful think and that’s why Huck is going to steal the money from them and help out the family. Huck realizes that this is a great caring family that is compassionate to others and he could not stand for them to robbed of such a great sum of money from two low down dirtbags.
Questions Chapter 27-30
Why did people stay up with the dead during this time
What we learn about Huck when he says the slaves will be with their families in two weeks
The way I see it this shows us that Huck has good intentions and thinks through his options. Through out the book Huck shows how carefully he thinks out his plans and ideas. Even though there can be hiccups in his plans he can think through it and fix what is wrong. It also shows how human he is. He is a caring down to earth person and we really see that with Ms. Marry Jane and how he knew what was happening was very wrong and he had to do something. Also for his plan to work he had to be honest and upfront to her with what was happening. In general this part in the book re-asures us that Huck is a good guy with good intentions and he will do just about anything to make what is wrong, right.
What were the methods that the towns people used to identify the real and fake brothers
One of the begging give aways was an old man that lived up town a aways that had seen the Duke, King, and Huck when the king claimed to be in not the location he was seen at. The real Duke and King show up before this conversation which is really what started the whole thing. During the interrogation there was a hand writing test that was conducted but it was found rather inconclusive. They then decide to see who knew what he had tattooed on his chest before he died and neither were found right do they all went to go dig up the grave and decide who was right about the tattoo. Non of it really mattered anyways because when they all found the gold everyone just about forgot about the interrogation.
Questions Chapter 31-35
Huck says “You can’t pray a lie” and what is trying to pray about and what does it mean
Huck felt bad because he stole Jim away from Ms.Watson. He was praying everything would be better and he hoped that it would take his guilt away but it didn't. He kept praying that he wouldn't do anymore bad things but he realized that that was a lie as well and there was no use in praying for thing that he knew would never happen. We see later in the chapter after Jim gets stolen away that Huck goes to break Jim out which would have contradicted Huck not wanting to do anymore bad things,
Why does Huck tear up the letter he writes?
He was writing to Ms. Watson about Jim being be ok and all but he realized that she wold have sold him anyways. Especially now since Jim ran away and it was very frown upon that a slave disobey a master and such. Huck then realized that he would have been associated with helping a slave escape and that made his heart heavy with guilt. After writing everything down he did feel better, better than praying at least and finally decided he must break Jim out of jail.
Huck is disappointed that Tom would help him steal Jim and how do I feel about it
I feel like Huck is kind of sad that Tom wants to help steel Jim back. Once Huck left all really got was praise and had no completion for wit or attention. Now it is almost like Huck has a competitor, but at the same time I feel like Huck is relived that his old friend is with him in a a time when he needed him most. I think Huck is also astonished that Tom would do such and awful thing and that he would turn his back and go to the authorities or something like that. This line is kind of od for me too since I would not expect Tom to instantly make such a bold agreement to a very illegal act.
What does Huck mean by these two statements he said at the end of the chapter
What I think Huck is referring to is the natural cruel nature of humans and how often times we survive off of others suffering. We see profits off of other peoples suffering a lot in this book and that is mainly excluding slavery. In the beginning Huck father held him hostage pretty much just to get some money. Ms. Watson was going to sell Jim for a large amount of money even though she promised not to. The family of orphans almost got scammed out of their money and everything they own. More and more I think he realizes this the more and more awful things happen.
Why do Huck and Tom want to find a harder way to break Jim free
When Huck told his plan it was a good, sound, functioning plan that would have gotten Jim, Huck, and Tom out ok and safe.Tom agreed it would work, but he said it was took plain and not worth the while if they could not have any excitement or story worthiness. Toms plan was basically just to barge in and play it off from there. Huck thought this was very foolish because Tom actually had an identity and an identity to keep safe from foolery and other things that might soil his good nature, and the nature of his family and friends back home. Tom instead on helping and doing ti his way so there was no use in Huck arguing him. Tom ends up almost ruining the whole operation when they find Jim, but Tom is clever and got them out of situation. Tom also made the new plan an even harder plan with Huck and him having to dig Jim out instead of just a normal rescue.
Questions Chapter 36-40
What are Tom and Huck's motivations for breaking Jim out
Huck is straight forward and only works for the thing he wants. If Huck wants Jim free he will do the most simple and easiest way to get Jim free. He doesn't cut corners either, he may take the most direct path but what he does is efficient and doesn't end poorly most of the time. Tom on the other hand wants to do what is cool and interesting and what will make a good story. What Tom wants is be interesting and truthful at the same time and to achieve this he must do everything how they would in a real jail or in a situation where it takes time to get the end goal. When they are trying to break Jim out, they don'r really have that kind of time and so Tom is basically just making everything 20 times harder than it should.
What do Huck and Tom mean by "let on" about something and why'd they do it
What they were talking about was telling everyone about their plan, knives, tunnel, and all that stuff. One of the two suggested that they dig with pick because of how long it was taking and how beaten up their hands had gotten. They came to the agreement that they should only use one tool but if it came to it they could decive them and stretch the story way out of proportion.
Why Tom writing letters and warning signs and why did he give instructions to the other slave
Tom is making the letters and warning signs is to make sure that all their "hard work" doesn't go to waist. As Tom said "This thing will go over flat," and that is what Tom doesn't want to happen. Tom worked hard for his whole confusing master plan to come together so he wants someone to whitness it. He has to take action because the family I oblivious and would take forever to figure it out. Tom told the slave just to ensure that his beautiful master plan would be witnessed and that is really the one reason he has done half of the thing he has done.
'How does the planning of Jim's jail break show satire
I think it can relate a lot to things we see today, in the media and news we always see stories that are designed to make you believe some happened a certain way when really it happened this way. It also shows how things can fake or staged almost. Tom and Huck could have easily broken Jim free but they made it complicated and intricate just for the glory and the "WOW" factor. Today there is fake news everywhere, fake news that is made, literally made to make you believe something rediculous happened when really it is just stage and complete bogus.
Huck says "I knew he was white inside" about Jim and why did he says this and what does it mean
What he means is that Jim is risking his freedom and for Tom after he got shot in the calf. when Huck says I knew he was white inside he means that no other black person from this time would do such a thing. Jim, Suck and recently tom, have all grown together on this crazy dangerous adventure that they have all experienced. In this scene Jim is really showing a lot of maturity and heart because I would even question if some white people would even make a decision like that which so much at risk.
Questions Chapter 41-End
Why does Huck feel so badly
Huck knows what happened to Tom and the whole fiasco which getting shot and such, but Aunt Sally has no idea. So when she is caring for Huck like a son pretty much and expressing her concerns for Tom he feels the guilt of pretty much putting her through that pain. When you think about it what Huck and Tom did is really screwing up this family, the emotional stress that they are putting them through is ridiculous and in the future Tom will not be able to visit his family since they think Huck is Tom and Tom is Sid so he won't be able to see them with out all the trickery for a long time. I feel like that is another part of why Huck feels awful is because he payed a huge part in pretty much ruining this family he doesn't even know.
What do we learn about Jim when he helps the doctor
Well, like when Jim said that Tom needed a doctor after he got shot, it shows that Jim has a kind heart and will potential risk himself for the good of others. When he popped up to help with Tom, the doctor could have possibly turn him in and then he would be gone for good. It is also an example of how smart Jim is even though he could be perceived not to be. He had to asses the situation and make a very important decision that could determine the out come of his friend Tom. Even though helping the doctor was a little risky in regards to Jim's safety, the best option for everyone was for him to help with getting Tom well. This is just a scene that further develops Jim's kind and friendly personality.
What do we learn about Tom after he wakes up
Assuming this question is in regards to him blabbing out about the whole plan that he and Huck had executed I would say we learned that Tom wanted recognition and was unsatisfied with the result of their plan. When he was talking out about it he seemed like he need the reassurance that his plan was best, most well executed plan ever. It also shows us how much Tom requires adventure in his life, Jim was a free slave and Huck and tom could have easily broken him out, Tom just had to go and make the whole thing an adventure worth remembering. That is especially in this part of the book but also all throughout, Tom is doing ridiculous things just make life more interesting.
What I think of Huck
Huckleberyy Finn is a good kid, we see all through out the book his actions have good intentions. Even though some of his actions may have negative side effects he is never intentionally trying to do bad things. He is quick thinker, as we see very often getting himself out of deep mud, but could still work on his lying a little bit because it isn't the greatest. I really like his personality as well, a lot like Jim he is kind and sweet and I really liked having that kind of a character a story filled with a bunch of people who are not so kind and forgiving.
